Howard Alden (Guitar - UK)
Born in Newport Beach, California, in 1958, Howard began playing at the age of ten, inspired
by recordings of Armstrong, Basie and Goodman, as well as by guitarists Barney Kessel,
Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt and George Van Eps. Soon he was working
professionally around Los Angeles playing in all styles of jazz groups from traditional to
modern. In 1978 he went east to work with Red Norvo for the summer in Atlantic City, and
continued to perform with him frequently for several years.
Moving to New York in 1982, Allen's talent was quickly recognised and sought after for
appearances with Joe Bushkin, Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Warren Vache and Woody Herman.
He continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike adding Benny Carter, Flip
Phillips, Mel Powell, Bud Freeman, Kenny Davern, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, Scott
Hamilton, Ken Peplowski and George Van Eps to his list of regular associates, for both
concert and recording dates.
In the late 1980s he co-led an exceptional quintet with Dan Barrett, ABQ, which made several
albums and toured regularly, including Britain. He was also a regular visitor to Britain as a
member of the Ruby Braff Trio. Howard continues to tour Britain annually, often working in
tandem with Dave Cliff, with whom he has recorded.
As a result of his association with, and inspiration from, Van Eps, Alden has been playing the
seven string guitar since 1992. He recorded four memorable albums with his hero between
1991 and 1993 for Concord. His duo albums with Ken Peplowski for the same label have also
received critical acclaim, as have those under his own leadership, including his solo album, My
Shining Hour, released in 2002.
In addition to his touring and recording activities, in 1999 he was to be heard on the
soundtrack of Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown , a movie for which he also coached Sean
Penn for his guitar playing role.
Howard's regular association with the Newport Jazz Festival led, in 2004, to him being
chosen for the all star line-up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the NJF, touring fifty
American cities, in addition to their appearance at the Festival itself.
Howard is married to singer Terrie Richards, and they are based in New York, although with
his busy schedule around the world he does not get to spend too much time at home.
